The Atlanta Braves beat the Houston Astros 7-0 in Game 6 of the World Series to clinch the 4th title in franchise history and 1st since 1995. The Braves had 2 starters this World Series that weren't even born the last time the Braves won the World Series. Not to mention a would be starter in Ronald Acuna Jr. who was also unborn the last time the Braves won a title. It has been a long and painful drought for Braves country but that all came to an end Tuesday night in Houston. In this article we will look back at all 6 games and see what the defining moments were in this World Series.
Game 1:
Braves 6, Astros 2
Top Performers:
Jorge Soler: 2-5, HR, 2 RBIs
Charlie Morton: 2.1 IP, 0 R, H, 3 K, 2 BB
The biggest headline from Game 1 and probably the biggest of the World Series was when Charlie Morton miraculously threw 16 pitches on a broken leg. After the game, Morton then apologized to the Braves faithful for not giving more.
Game 2:
Braves 2, Astros 7
Top Performers:
Jose Altuve: 2-4, HR, 2 R, RBI
Jose Urquidy: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 7 K
This was a must win game for the Astros because they could not go to Atlanta down 2-0. They were able to get the win and head to the ATL with an even series.
Game 3:
Braves 2, Astros 0
Top Performers:
Ian Anderson: 5 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 4 K, 3 BB
Braves Bullpen: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB
This was a great game for the Braves to pitch a combined 2 hit shutout. On a night where both offenses were struggling, the Braves pitching staff shut down the Astros powerful offense giving a 2-1 series lead.
Game 4:
Braves 3, Astros 2
Top Performers:
Jorge Soler: 1-1, PH HR
Dansby Swanson: 1-3, HR
Once again the pitching staffs came to play and once again the Braves pitchers outlasted the Astros staff. After a huge win at home, the Braves are just 1 game away from a championship and can win it all at home in Game 4.
Game 5:
Astros 9, Braves 5
Top Performers:
Martin Maldonado: 1-3, BB, 3 RBIs
Adam Duvall: 1-4, HR, 4 RBIs
After Adam Duvall's 1st inning grand slam, the Braves bats were silenced and Houston went off for 9 runs. Houston stayed alive and forced the series back to Houston for Game 6.
Game 6:
Braves 7, Astros 0
Top Performers:
Max Fried: 6 IP, 4 H, 6 K
Jorge Soler: 1-3, HR, BB, 2 Rs, 3 RBIs
Freddie Freeman: 2-4, HR, R, 2 RBIs
The craziest play all series long happend in the bottom of the 1st in Game 6. Michael Brantley was at the plate with 0 outs and Altuve on 1st. Brantley hit a grounder towards 1st base. Freddie Freeman came off the bag to field the ball and Max Fried hurried to cover 1st. But, Fried was not looking for the toss from Freeman until he got to the bag. He got the ball right as Brantley approached the bag and this happend:
Brantley missed the base and Fried did to... or so everyone thought. Brantley was called safe by the umpire and the Braves didn't challenge. However, during the replay on television, it is seen that Fried's other foot touches the bag after getting stepped on. But nobody challenged the play and Fried later got out of the jam unscathed and went on to pitch 6 scoreless innings and playing a huge part in the Braves win.
It was a magical ride for the Braves this year and being a Braves fan, it is great to see the Braves win it all especially with this being the year that the great Hank Aaron was honored. The Braves will definitely be in the mix of things next year but right now, Vegas has the Dodgers as clear favorites to win the World Series in 2022. This was a fun baseball season and I can't wait for next year. But until then, Chop On!
